Orlando Sports Broadcaster David Baumann Makes NBA Headlines After Van Gundy Interview

May 21, 2013 in NBA

Stan-Van-Gundy-interviewMany reports have surfaced that Stan Van Gundy was the leading candidate for the head coaching job for the Atlanta Hawks, but after this morning interview with ESPN Radio David Baumann, we can cross him off the list.

The Former Orlando Magic Head Coach told SportsTalk1080 that he will not return to the sideline for the 2013-2014 season. While many anticipated his return, Van Gundy will take this time off to spend with his family.

A contributor to NBC Sports Radio, Van Gundy coached the Magic from 2007-12 and earlier the Miami Heat from 2003-05. Montverde Academy topped the ESPN and USA Today final rankings last month after winning the National High School Invitational. Stan Van Gundy helped rebuild the Orlando Magic franchise alongside All-Star Center Dwight Howard and role players like Hedo Turkoglu, JJ Reddick and long time Magic Vet Jameer Nelson.

For those looking for a slice of the Van Gundy family, tune into the NBA Playoffs where his brother Jeff Van Gundy weighs in on the NBA all-stars and the job by the officiating crews.

3 Lessons from Lebron to Be Your Own MVP in Your Career

May 17, 2013 in NBA

lebron-mvp-lessons

This year, Lebron James scored his fourth league MVP award, just one vote shy of what would have been a history-making unanimous vote.  It certainly goes without saying he deserved it.  He’s had a great season, being the only player in the league to lead his team in scoring, rebounding, and assists per game, amongst various other ridiculous stats and accolades.

Unfortunately, not all of us have the natural gifts required to win MVP awards in the NBA (despite what middle-aged YMCA court regulars may think).  But that’s not to say corporate ladder-climbers and small business owners can’t become MVPs in their own arenas.

Below are a few lessons we could all learn from the latest NBA MVP to help us become MVPs in our own careers and industries.

1.  You work for a team

When things are going great at work and you’ve just landed a new account or reached what seemed like an unattainable goal, it can be easy to get caught up in the elation and recognition, forgetting about the support system around you that got you there.  Don’t fall into that trap.  It’s unbecoming and can come back to bite you later.  Lebron James knows he is a star, but he also recognizes his team at every opportunity.  He gives credit where credit is due after every game.

What’s more, Lebron recognizes when someone else is in a position for success and dishes them the ball.  It’s the very reason he leads the team in assists.  He knows his talents alone won’t take him all the way (he didn’t win a Championship in Cleveland, did he?) and depends on a talented team of individuals who are just as passionate as he is and just as capable of success.

2.  Keep your eye on the prize

This is sometimes hard to remember during the day in and day out grind of work life   But goal-setting for your career is a proven method of success.   The process starts with creating your goal, or prize.

For Lebron James, the prize is more obvious. It’s the Championship.  ESPNews, available with some cable packages, had an inspiring highlight reel of Lebron’s MVP statements.  In it he stated “My ultimate goal is to win an NBA championship…It wasn’t to win MVP trophies…”.  That statement says it all.  Because Lebron shows focus, he doesn’t let the other accolades slow him down.  He sees the pot of gold and pursues it, no matter how far off in the distance it may be.  And he might very well get that pot of gold again this year.

Set a career goal for yourself and pursue it with an unrivaled passion and you too could become an MVP, or win whatever your “championship” may be.

3.  Be a leader

There are countless books, videos, and resources dedicated to what it takes to be a good leader, many of them with conflicting philosophies.  But all of them agree on one thing:  you have to start by becoming one.  Having a leadership role gives you decision-making responsibilities, managerial responsibilities, and challenges to overcome.  The experience from all of these things will inevitably elevate you, and if you’re smart, the others around you (see Lesson 1).

Lebron is a natural leader not only because of his raw talents but because he inspires others and often pushes others beyond their normal capabilities.  For this reason, he is nominated to his position, organically, by those around him.

But social nomination is not the only way to become a leader.  Often the task is given to the person brave enough to simply raise their hand.  If your company has committees, clubs, or is giving out some additional responsibility, volunteer for the job.  Prove yourself in the position and you’ll be an MVP in no time.

If you want more information about Lebron’s leadership-specific lessons, Forbes had a nice piece last year.

Careers rewards and industry recognition await those who keep these lessons in mind.  Follow in the footsteps of Lebron and see yourself reach new heights.  Not literally of course…they won’t make you any taller for the NBA.  But do expect more MVP high-fives from your boss and colleagues.

Phil Jackson to the Brooklyn Nets

May 7, 2013 in NBA

Phil-Jackson

You heard it here first folks, Phil Jackson will soon be the New Head Coach for the Brooklyn Nets. Shortly after the Brooklyn Nets were eliminated from the First Round of the Playoffs, they took to the airwaves and let the media know that PJ Carlesimo will not be returning as Head Coach.

This news got the media talking as names like Brian Shaw, Larry Brown and Phil Jackson came into the mix. While each coach equally can bring a lot to the Ball Club, Phil Jackson has the experience and knowledge to turn the Brooklyn Nets into a Winning Franchise.

The biggest roadblock will be that Phil Jackson has expressed that he wants to have control in the decisions that are made in the front office. He has even expressed interest in becoming the President of the team he plans on coaching, of course after his coaching term with the team.

Look for the Brooklyn Nets to accommodate Phil Jackson’s request in order to land one of the best coaches in NBA History. Also look for the Brooklyn Nets to pursue players like JR Smith, Paul Pierce and even Kevin Garnett in the off season.

2013 NBA Playoff First Round Matchups and Predictions

April 19, 2013 in NBA

2013 NBA Playoffs

It is not quite March Madness, but for NBA Fans the time has finally arrived to start making predictions for the 2013 NBA Playoff First Round Matchups. Many of us will be looking for the teams that can possibly upset the other, but a lot of these teams are evenly matched so we will have to see who steps up and wants it more.

The EAST First Round Match Ups

miami-heatMiami Heat VS Milwaukee Bucksbucks

Prediction: The Miami Heat are the best team in the NBA by a long mile. With that being said, the Milwaukee Bucks have a long road ahead of them and will need to bring their best to even just win 1 game in this series. The bucks will need Monte Ellis and Brandon Jennings to have big games in order for them to combat the attack of Lebron James and Dwayne Wade. The Bucks lack a lot of size and will find themselves scrambling to guard Lebron James. Look for the Heat to take this series in either 4-5 games.

Series Prediction: Heat Win Series in 5 Games

KnicksNew York Knick VS Boston Celtics celtics

Prediction: The streaking Knicks look to be better than ever and will give Boston headaches in just about every position. The injury plagued Celtics will be relying heavily on their reserves Jason Terry and Jeff Green. Both players have provided a spark off the bench, but I am not sure their play will be enough to put away the New York Knicks. The Knicks come into this game with Carmelo Anthony and JR Smith playing the best basketball in their career. Many analysts including myself believe the Knicks will cruise through this series and will be the only “competition” for the Heat in the East.

Series Prediction: Knicks Win Series in 5 Games

pacersIndiana Pacers VS Atlanta Hawkshawks

Prediction: Before the NBA All-Star break, The Indiana Pacers were predicted to be the only team that could give the Miami Heat a run for their money. Since the those predictions, the Pacers have disappointed a lot of fans and analyst with their sloppy play. Many expect the Pacers to cruise through this series, but don’t expect to get past the 2nd round of the playoffs. The Pacers have the pieces to go far, but they haven’t been playing as a cohesive team. Look for the Hawks to take 2 games in this series.

Series Prediction: Pacers Win Series in 6 Games

netsBrooklyn Nets VS Chicago Bullsbulls

Prediction: The “Derrick Rose-Less Chicago Bulls” have surpassed all the expectations analyst set for them this season. Many rallied behind the team after they put a stop to the Miami Heat’s 27 Game Winning Streak. Even with their impressive wins this season, they have a large task ahead of them as the Brooklyn Nets have All-Star Deron Williams leading the way. The Brooklyn Nets may shock a lot of NBA fans during this series as they will stomp the Bulls in 6 games.

Series Prediction: Brooklyn Nets Win Series in 7 Games

The WEST First Round Match Ups

thunderOklahoma City Thunder VS Houston Rocketsrockets

Prediction: The Oklahoma City Thunder have climbed the ranks and have proven to be one of the best teams in the NBA. Many believe the Finals will be a repeat of last year with the Heat and Thunder battling it out for the NBA Championship. A few teams in the West will have a thing or 2 to say about that, but from the looks of it right now, the Miami Heat and Thunder are the best teams going into the First Round. Look for the Thunder to demolish the Rockets and possibly sweep them.

Series Prediction: Thunder Win Series in 4 Games

San Antonio Spurs VS LA Lakerslakers

Prediction: The Lakers have had the most scrutinized season ever, but they enter the playoffs on a high note as they were able to 2 straight games to take the 7th spot in the Playoffs. Many believe this late confidence will help them upset the San Antonio Spurs. I couldn’t agree more with these predictions as Dwight and Pau have finally come around and learned to play together. Look for the Lakers to stun the NBA world with a First Round upset.

Series Prediction: Lakers Win Series in 6 Games

nuggetsDenver Nuggets VS Golden State Warriorswarriors

Prediction: The Denver Nuggets have taken the NBA by storm with their to get out on the break and put up points with the best of them. The Golden State Warriors aren’t far behind as they have been led by All Stars Seth Curry and David Lee. Look for the Nuggets to put up a hell of a fight, but the at the end the Golden State Warriors will win this series in 7 Games.

Series Prediction: Warriors Win Series in 7 Games

clippersLos Angeles Clippers VS Memphis Grizzliesgrizzlies

Prediction: The Clippers are by far the most electric and entertaining team in the NBA. Blake Griffin, Chris Paul and Jamal Crawford have become a dynamic trio that teams fear. The Memphis Grizzlies are not too shabby themselves, but their lack of leadership will inevitably cost them this series. The Clippers will need Jamal Crawford to have a big series in order for them to knock off the Grizzlies early.

Series Prediction: Clippers Win Series in 5 Games
